Will Chiropractic help my horse?

In my practice, I have delivered chiropractic care and craniosacral therapy to provide relief and restore function to horses with the following symptoms:

  • Lack of coordination in hind limbs
  • Muscle atrophy and / or imbalance
  • Limping on any limb
  • Abnormal gait
  • Postures or behaviors indicating pain, i.e. hunched back, tail wringing, bucking, etc.
  • Problems with leads
  • Cinchy, girthy
  • Painful areas over the spine, neck or ribs
  • Facial nerve paralysis
  • Dropping feed
  • Generally stiff and sore
  • Decreased performance in the athlete

My experience as a horse chiropractor encompasses most breeds, from Minis to Holsteiners; and most uses, from professional barrel-racing horses to long-retired backyard companions. I use traditional low-force adjusting methods and employ equine craniosacral therapy, also.

My fascination with horses began when I was a kid. My Dad would tell stories about his Grand-dad's horses. These were hard-working farm horses with names like "Babe," "Rock," and "King." They always seemed to save the day with their strength and determination. During my growing up years, my family didn't have resources for owning or boarding horses. So my exposure to them was through horse camps and intermittent riding lessons.

It wasn't until I met Charlie Westman, DVM, that horses became a regular part of my life. In May 2007 I began an internship with Charlie. I learned from him and assisted him on a weekly basis as he provided chiropractic care to horses in need. During the first year of my internship, I only hoped that one day I would be able to provide chiropractic care to horses. At that time, it was still illegal for Doctors of Chiropractic to provide services to animals in Minnesota. Charlie could, because he is a Veterinarian.

We lobbied the Minnesota Legislature very hard to change the law. In May 2008, they did! Now specially-trained chiropractors can provide services to horses in Minnesota, as long as a veterinary referral is obtained.

So, dreams do come true. Today, I am a horse chiropractor. My internship with Charlie ended by becoming an Associate in his practice. I get to spend time each week providing chiropractic care to horses in need - helping them feel and function better, making them safer and better performing animals for their handlers, trainers and owners. I travel with Charlie most Fridays and do horse calls on my own most Saturdays.

Yep, dreams do come true!
